THIS IS A REBUBLISHED MAP LAID ONTO CLOTH
Ref: 48Docklands, 1878, Edward Stanford

A map of the Environs of the Isle of Dogs and the Dockland Areas of London first published circa 1878. By late Victorian times, development contiued apace on the Isle of Dogs. The Milwall docks had opened in 1868, and while some of its original marshland remained, it was fast disappearing. The opening of the new dock had provided welcome employment following the decline of the ship building industry after the banking crisis of 1866. However, these new jobs could not replace all those lost, and poverty was on the rise. Much of the housing was of very poor quality, and whilst malaria was on the decline, it still stalked the mists of the remaining marshy areas. Many left hoping for a better life in the New World.
