THIS IS A REBUBLISHED MAP LAID ONTO CLOTH
Ref: 44LincolnsInnFields, 1799, Richard Horwood

A map of the Envrions of Lincoln's Inn Fields first published circa 1799. Richard Horwood began his great project of mapping London in 1790, raising money to fund the project and estimating it would take two years to complete. The first map was published in 1792, the same year Sir John Soane bought No.12 Lincolns Inn. He did not complete the map until 1799.It is considered by many to be the finest 18th-century map and certainly the largest. As with many cartographers, he ran into financial difficulties and struggled to complete the map. Finally, in 1798, the Phoenix Assurance Company came to his aid with a £500 loan, which in today's money is around £54,000 according to the Bank of Enland's inflation calculator. In all, there were 32 seperate maps, which when put together, measured 165 x 84 inches, and Horwood claimed every house in London was depicted. He died in 1803, aged 45, and sdaly, like many cartographers before and after him, in poverty.
