THIS IS A REBUBLISHED MAP LAID ONTO CLOTH
Ref: Geological003, 1841, Edward Hitchcock

A geological map of Massachusetts, first published circa 1841, republished 2018. The geological formations found in each clearly labelled town and city are listed as the colour key. For example coal, iron, lead, copper, zinc, slate, and granite.
When this map was published:
Coal is formed over million of years. The energy in coal comes from energy that was stored in plants and trees. The surface of the earth was covered in swamp forests 300 million years ago, and as these trees and plants - ferns, reeds, and mosses, for example - died, they formed layers at the bottom of the swamp. Water, dirt, new trees, and plants, formed layer upon layer at the bottom of the swamp and eventually the heat and pressure produced chemical and physical changes in the plant layers, forcing out oxygen, leaving rich carbon deposits. These layers eventually becoming coal. It is a non-renewable energy source because it is unlikely that new coal will form because the conditions of the earth are now vastly different, and the process takes many millions of years.
Granite is formed from the slow crystallisation of magma below the earths surface.
Slate is a metamorphic rock that forms from mudstone or shale which usually contains clay or volcanic ash.
