Villages, towns, and cities labelled include Norwich, Harleston, Yarmouth, Thetford, and Lynn Regis.
When this map was published:
Norfolk is a maritime county, which gives the title of Duke to the noble family of Howard, the first peer of the realm; and was, during the Saxon heptarchy, included in the kingdom of the East Angles. It is in the province of Canterbury, diocese of Norwich, and in the Norfolk circuit. This county is nearly an island of elliptical form, being surrounded by the sea and four rivers. It is 70 miles long, 46 broad, and 210 miles in circumference; containing 2350 sqaure miles, or 1,504,000 square acres; divided into 31 hundreds, 660 parishes, 164 vicarages, 1499 villages, one city Norwich, which gives the title of Earl to the family of Gordon, sends 2 members to parliament, is the residence of a bishop, and is one of the first cities in the kingdom for trade, containing 36 parish churches, besides its chathedral, and is 6 miles in circumference. It has 30 market-towns, viz. Thetford, in part, which gives the title of Viscount to the family of Fitzroy, and sends 2 members to parliament; Walsingham gives the title of Baron to the family Grey, and sends 2 members to parliament; and Yarmouth, which sends 2 members to parliament also; Burnham, Aylesham, North Walsham, Buckenham, Harleston, Harling, Attleborough, Fakenham, Loddon, Caston, Cromer, Dereham, Diss, Downham, Foulsham, Hingham, Holt, Methwold, Reepham, Seeching, Snetsham, Swaffham, Watton, Windham or Wymondham, and Worsted. Amongst the villages, Castle Rising gives the title of Baron to the family of Howard, and sends 2 members to parliament; Wolverton gives the title of Baron to the Walpole family; and Raynham that of Marquis to the family of Townshend. The rivers are the Great and Lesser Oufe, Wisbeach, the Yare, Waveney, Windfor, Thyrn, Lynn, and some lesser streams. The most remarkable places are Winterton Ness, Easton Ness, Yarmouth Sands, Boston and Lynn Deeps, Well's Harbour, Clay Harbour, Havens Mouth, Hitcham Haven, Weybourne Hope, Yarmouth Roads, Cromer Bay, the Salt Marshes, several Meers, and Liden Trees near Deepham. This county produces rich pastures, corn, honey, saffron, great plenty of various game and water fowl; all kinds of river and sea fish, rabbits, sheep, cattle, wood. It abounds with heaths; the marshy and watery places area aguish and unwholesome; but in the sandy or clay part it is pleasant and healthy. The villages are large and well inhabited, particularly the eastern part.; and the soil in this county is more various than perhaps any other county, and comprehends all the forts that are to be found inland. It sends 2 members to parliament, 2 for the county, and 10 as above shewn; pays 22 parts of the land-tax, and provides 960 men to the national militia. as published c.1787
