THIS IS A REBUBLISHED PRINT LAID ONTO CLOTH
Ref: Plate 14A, 1928
Antique Illustration of Butterflies.Taken from a pochior print first published circa 1928. Pochior printing involved the use of stencils and was a precurser to screen printing. Stenciling is one of the oldest methods of producing prints and was used in prehistory, the hand being used as a stencil to produce images on cave walls 35,000 or more years ago. Each colour was hand applied using a different stencil, the colours laid one on top of the other to produce the finished image. It was a very skilled and time consuming process and is rarely used today.
