THIS IS A REBUBLISHED PRINT LAID ONTO CLOTH
Ref: Parrots003, 1884
Antique illustration of the Barnard's Parakeet. Taken from a colour woodblock print first published circa 1884.
Woodblock printing originated in China antiquity and later spread to Europe. It is a relief printing process where areas of a wooden block are carved away leaving raised areas. It is these raised areas that carry the ink that is then transferred to the paper. In colour printing each colour requires a separate bloc, one colour being layered on top of the other, black being printed first. The original watercolours were painted by A.F.Lydon and the wood blocks created by Bejamin Fawcett. It was a laborious and highly skilled process and Fawcett was among the finest of the Victorian woodblock printers.
