The System of Farriery
The practice of this useful art has been too long, almost entirely, confined to a set of men, totally ignorant of anatomy and the general principles of medicine. It is not therefore surprising that their prescriptions should be absurd as the reasons they give for administering them. It cannot indeed be expected that farriers who are almost universally illiterate men should make any real progress in their profession. They prescribe draughts, the rowel, cauterize, & c without being able to give any other reason for their practice, than that their fathers did before them. How can such men deduce the cause of a disease from its symptoms, or form a rational method of cure, when they are equally ignorant of the causes of diseases and the operation of medicines? The wretched state of this useful art, especially in the country, has determined us to select from the most approved authors, such a system of practice as seems to be formed on rational principles: this we hope will be sufficient apology for being rather copious upon this subject.
Previous to treating on the diseases incidental to horses, and the method of cure, we shall introduce a description of the Osteology and Myology of that noble animal, which will be comprised in six plates. As we have spared neither pains nor expense, to illustrate this system, as well as every other we have hitherto undertaken to discuss, we presume it will appear that we have not been wanting in any instance to merit public sanction or render our work conducive to the attainment of universal Science.
