THIS IS AN ORIGINAL MAP
Ref: Antique011, 1839, J. & C Walker
BEDFORDSHIRE CIRCA 1839 – FIRST EDITION
This original hand coloured map dating from c.1839 was engraved by the J & C Walker brothers and published by Longman, Rees, Orme and Baldwin. It has been dissected and laid on cloth for use by travelers. The cloth has browned over the years and weakened in places but is intact so while we could relay it, we think keeping it in its original condition is preferable. We have made the case covered in marbled paper.
John & Charles Walker were engravers and cartographers flourishing in the mid 1800's. From circa 1835 they produced a series of county maps that included the great changes in county boundaries resulting from the Reform Act of 1830 that abolished the Rotton Boroughs. They were published in atlas form as well as being dissected and issued as maps for travelers as this example shown. These maps continued to be adapted and published into late Victorian times.
