Original map first published c.1920. Republished July 2016.

World War One map depicting the east of Italian Front including the Carnic Alps, the Venetian Plateau and the Gulf of Triest during the First World War 1914 - 1918. The inset map depicts the Isonzo Front & Isonzo river , between Italy and Austria. Much of the fighting along the Italian Front took place in the harsh, and treacherous, terrain of the Alps where specialist units called the Alpini were entrenched for much of the war. The Isonzo River provided a natural barrier between Italy and Austria and the river was the scene of 12 major battles between 1915 - 1918. Please see our blog for further information.

Contemporary Events

As published at the time of this map, in 1920:

Italy declared war on Austria, May 23rd 1915, and on Germany, Aug.27th 1916. She had been a member of the Triple Alliance, whose other members were Germany and Austria-Hungary. Austria's failure to acquaint Italy with her plans against Serbia in July, 1914, made a breach between the two nations inevitable, but for the nine months following the outbreak of the Great War Italy remained true to the spirit of the Alliance. Meantime popular sentiment caused Italy to draw away from the Alliance in view of Austria's perfidy, and on 4th May 1915, she formally denounced it and, as stated, joined the Triple Entente on May 23rd.

 Framing Information
We make our own frames from moulding hand finished in our workshops. The standard finish is a distressed black with a gold slip inserted for the larger maps.

We finish the moulding in two other colours, Antique Red and Antique Green. These colours can be used on any of our prints or maps, both reproductions and originals, but have been chosen specifically to suit some of the antique prints and illustrations.

Some of the maps are very big so for weight, shipping and safety reasons we use 3mm acrylic as the glazing material.
 Product Information
We specialize in supplying original maps and reproductions of the rarer maps, all dissected and hand laid onto 100% natural cotton cloth. All of them are supplied in handmade slipcases covered in marbled paper taken from our collection of original papers dating back to circa 1700.
