World war one map depicting the Western Front and the Battle of the Ancre, the last British offensive in the Battle of the Somme. British and German lines are differentiated by Red and Green lines. The inset map shows the Thieval to Combles District. The towns of Cambrai, Arras and Peronne are also visible.

Contemporary Events

As published at the time of this map, c.1920:

British forces, on July 1st, 1916, commenced a great offensive astride the Somme and Ancre rivers. The attacks on the Somme were successful. Further north, on the Ancre, the storming parties failed to hold Beaumont-Hamel and Gommecourt, and the contest was so severe that Sir Douglas Haig eventually decided not to press this attack, but to follow up his advantages in the southern sector, and work up to the Ancre defensives from the south. This initial attack on the Ancre, like that on the Somme, was undertaken to relive the German pressure on the fortress of Verdun.

 Framing Information
We make our own frames from moulding hand finished in our workshops. The standard finish is a distressed black with a gold slip inserted for the larger maps.

We finish the moulding in two other colours, Antique Red and Antique Green. These colours can be used on any of our prints or maps, both reproductions and originals, but have been chosen specifically to suit some of the antique prints and illustrations.

Some of the maps are very big so for weight, shipping and safety reasons we use 3mm acrylic as the glazing material.
 Product Information
We specialize in supplying original maps and reproductions of the rarer maps, all dissected and hand laid onto 100% natural cotton cloth. All of them are supplied in handmade slipcases covered in marbled paper taken from our collection of original papers dating back to circa 1700.
