A map of the north part of Great Britain called Scotland 1714. Published by Herman Moll this scarce map shows Scotland in 1714 just 7 years after the Union of Parliaments. The number of MP's added to the Westminster Parliament from Scotland numbered 45, making 558 MP's in all.

Scotland suffered from a series of bad harvests in the 1690 and losses incurred by the Darien Scheme (an attempted colony in the America's) led to severe economic instability. The English Parliament voted to pay £400.000 to Scotland, this mainly going to those who lost money in the Darien Scheme so they would obviously be in favour of the union. We have tried to work out what value this money would represent today. The answer, in simple terms, according to which measure is being used, and there are several, is not that much really or quite a lot more. According to the website www.measuringworth.com the calculations vary between £52,240,000 and £1,147,000,000. Looking at the cold figures the latter figure looks an awful lot but when worked out per head of the population it does not seem so much. It represents at today's value somewhere between £42 and £917 for every man women and child in the country. Not a lot of help really.

Much detail is provided about the natural resources of both land and sea. Down each side of the map are little views of the towns of Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Sterling, Montrose, Aberdeen and Ross along with Bass rock and the castles of Stirling and Edinburgh.

Population of Scotland at this time estimated to be around 1,250,000.

 Framing Information
We make our own frames from moulding hand finished in our workshops. The standard finish is a distressed black with a gold slip inserted for the larger maps.

We finish the moulding in two other colours, Antique Red and Antique Green. These colours can be used on any of our prints or maps, both reproductions and originals, but have been chosen specifically to suit some of the antique prints and illustrations.

Some of the maps are very big so for weight, shipping and safety reasons we use 3mm acrylic as the glazing material.
 Product Information
We specialize in supplying original maps and reproductions of the rarer maps, all dissected and hand laid onto 100% natural cotton cloth. All of them are supplied in handmade slipcases covered in marbled paper taken from our collection of original papers dating back to circa 1700.
