This rare edition of Robert Laurie & James Whittle's copper engraved map of London was published in 1800. The British Library Howgego have it that the first edition was published in 1804 but this map carried the date of 1800. Published just a few years prior to the laying out of Regent's Park it shows that although London had rapidly expanded over the last 100 years or so open fields still lapped the edge of Hyde Park. The Isle of Dogs was still largely marsh land and Islington and Hackney still villages.

Contemporary Events

In Britain fear of revolution leads to the banning of 2 or more people associating to demand an increase of their wages. In 1801 the first census puts the UK's population at 10.4 million. In America George Washington died in 1799 and in France Bonaparte seizes power. In 1803 the USA doubled in size with the Louisiana Purchase from France. At just over 1,000,000 people London's population was beginning to expand at a prodigious rate.

 Framing Information
We make our own frames from moulding hand finished in our workshops. The standard finish is a distressed black with a gold slip inserted for the larger maps.

We finish the moulding in two other colours, Antique Red and Antique Green. These colours can be used on any of our prints or maps, both reproductions and originals, but have been chosen specifically to suit some of the antique prints and illustrations.

Some of the maps are very big so for weight, shipping and safety reasons we use 3mm acrylic as the glazing material.

We specialize in supplying original maps and reproductions of the rarer maps, all dissected and hand laid onto 100% natural cotton cloth. All of them are supplied in handmade slipcases covered in marbled paper taken from our collection of original papers dating back to circa 1700.
