Our slip cases

We have an extensive collection of antique marbled paper dating back to c.1700. For example, the first paper shown above left is an end paper from a book published in Paris in 1714. The other examples date from that time to around 1850. All our cases are individually hand made and the papers we use to cover them are printed but reproduced from these beautiful original papers. Small and medium maps are available in slip cases. See marble paper.

Our maps

Our maps are printed with pigment ink on to archival paper and then each one is hand laid on to cloth. The maps are presented in beautiful slip cases which are made individually or framed in our moulding's which are hand finished in black or in Birds Eye Maple veneer. We are a small family business and nothing is mass produced. See about us.

We have been collectors for more than 40 years and own all the originals that you see on this site. See press article.

Being passionate about maps means  we have worked hard to create reproductions that are as close to, and as beautiful as, the originals. They have starred in BBC series 'Cranford', the stage play 'Les Miserables' and have even appeared in a Hollywood film..

Our frames

Maps, obviously, are not watercolours or oil paintings. We feel they require an honest simple moulding that enhances the map but does not compete with it and draws the eye in. To this end we produce the moulding in our own workshop. As well as the front we pay attention to the back of the frames, they are all strutted.

Standard and large maps are all framed. The vast majority we frame in a hand finished black with a gold slip . Though the gold slip is optional we would recommend it as it lifts the map out.

Additionally, for large maps, we offer veneered mouldings  in Birds Eye Maple, Rosewood, Walnut etc. The veneer is laid and clamped in the traditional way using glue that penetrates the wood. We do this in our own workshop as it ensures that the veneer does not peel off in our dry centrally heated houses as veneer applied using impact adhesive can do.
